Solomons' finance minister wants regional co-operation pact on labour mobility

The Solomon Islands Finance Minister, Gordon Darcy Lilo, says expanding labour mobility to all Forum Pacific Island member countries would be a win-win situation for all involved.

Mr Lilo says he would like to see Australia and New Zealand committed to some kind of bilateral arrangement or a regional co-operation pact on labour mobility for everybody.

Countries already benefiting from a seasonal labour employment scheme to New Zealand are Samoa, Tonga, Vanuatu, and the Cook Islands.

Meanwhile, Australia is planning to set up vocational training institutions in Pacific Island countries.

Mr Lilo says there are many benefits to expanding both schemes.

"I would say, looking at the combination of both will work out to some kind of an advantage to all the parties involved. That's not to say the Australian one is better than the New Zealand one. The final outcome that we would want to see is that these kinds of arrangement will lead to greater economic benefits to all the employers in employing countries, and good benefits to the employee."

Gordon Darcy Lilo says remittances sent back to the islands will also increase.

The recent 2007 Forum Economic Ministers meeting in Palau has recommended for Forum leaders to push for this arrangement, at their October meeting in Tonga.
