Delays in preparations for Kiribati elections

1:52 pm on 27 July 2007

Kiribati's electoral commissioner says the announcement of the final list of candidate nominations for the 2007 elections has been delayed.

Nominations closed on July the 25th and were due to have been made public by now.

Rine Ueara says they are still waiting on three electorates to submit their candidates' names.

She says there has been a communication breakdown with three electoral districts.

"It's Tamana that's from the southern islands, and one from the central that's Aranuka, and Beru, that's from Southern Islands too. It's basically a communication problem."

Voters from 23 electoral districts look set to go to the polls on August 22.
