Talks with striking Fiji nurses breaks down

7:26 am on 28 July 2007

Fiji's interim administration has refused further dialogue with striking nurses after talks on the restoration of the full 5 percent pay cut broke down last night.

The Fiji Times quotes the head of the Prime Minister's Office, Parmesh Chand, as saying there is no purpose in continuing discussions.

Mr Chand says the government is unable to meet the nurses' demand for the restoration of the full 5% pay cut straight away.

He says the burden of the pay cuts has to be shared equally by all and there are no special deals for nurses alone.

With the strike now in its fourth day, a 26-year old school teacher died of an asthma attack as he was being airlifted from Levuka Hospital to Suva for treatment.
