New Solomons police commissioner wants image change followed by rearmament

7:20 pm on 30 July 2007

The new Solomon Islands Police Commissioner of the Solomon Islands Police Force, Mohammed Jahir Khan is embarking on a major image rebuilding exercise for the force.

A government press release describes the rebuilding exercise as a prelude to the police force's proposed rearmament programme.

Mr Khan says that his immediate focus is on creating a positive public perception of the Solomon Islands Force after the ethnic tension and the rio last year.

He says their image had been tarnished by the involvement of some police in the ethnic conflict and the 2006 riot but says these elements have been removed.

Mr Khan says the force now has to interact more with the community in order to take the message of the police across.
