Solomon Islands Police request extra funds from government

8:58 am on 1 August 2007

The Solomon Islands Police Commissioner has put in a request for a supplementary budget to cover a shortfall in certain areas.

Mohammed Jahir Khan says he's asked the government for an extra 18 million Solomon Islands dollars or 2.6 million U.S. dollars.

He says this is in addition to the police's annual budget of 68 million dollars or 9.7 million U.S. dollars

"The supplementary budget that I requested was to address the over-expenditures, for example, telecommunications, fuel, uniforms and also the salaries because during the ethnic tension, the police officers were not paid for months. And, there is a need to pay every police officer what is due to them."

Mr Khan says it's his understanding that Finance has agreed to a portion of the supplement but this will need to go to cabinet for approval.
