Samoa bans turkey tail imports

1:55 pm on 1 August 2007

Samoa is to enforce a ban on the import of turkey tail meat from the United States from tomorrow.

The government originally imposed the ban to be effective in May but it was extended to the end of July because wholesale companies had already placed their orders.

The ban is a preventative measures to halt the increasing number of non-communicable diseases such as diabetes and high blood pressure.

Although companies should no longer import turkey tails as from tomorrow, a health ministry official says they will still be available in shops until the supplies of the meat will be sold out.
