Tongan committee considering democratic reform ready to report back in just over a week

A member of Tonga's nine person tripartite committee considering options for democratic reform says their deliberations have been going very well.

The committee is looking at several options to bring more democracy to Tonga, including the report compiled by the National Committee on Political Reform, which had been headed Prince Tu'ipelehake until his death a year ago in a road accident in California.

The pro-democracy advocate, Akilisi Pohiva, says the parliamentary commmittee has met seven times over the past two weeks but it will struggle to report back to the Assembly by August 6th as scheduled.

"Maybe towards the end of next week or early the week after next. We still keep our discussion confidential, all I can say for now is that we are looking forward to the prospect of achieving what we have been trying to achieve."
