The United States President George Bush has declared an emergency in the Federated States of Micronesia and has ordered federal aid to areas affected by a drought which has lasted since March.

The president's declaration clears the way for the Department of Homeland Security, Federal Emergency Management Agency to coordinate all disaster relief efforts and provide emergency assistance for the affected areas.

The drought and flooding have caused food shortages in the islands of Kuttu, Lukunoch, Onanu, Oneop, Onou, and Tamatam within Chuuk State.
