The 1600 people affected by a drought in the Federated States of Micronesia will receive help through an emergency food assistance programme.

The US President George W Bush has ordered the programme as part of his recent emergency declaration for Micronesia.

The US Federal Emergency Management Agency are part of the relief effort and their coordinating officer Woodrow Goins Jr says the United States will send shipments of food to Chuuk State.

"Food is the requirement - the emergency food assistance programme has been activated by the United States Department of Agriculture, that was the primary request of the most urgent need, and we're going to coordinate with the national government and Chuuk State to assist them in the delivery of the emergency food."

Mr Goins says there is a specialist team on the ground working to administer the programme.
