Tuna cannery in American Samoa to advertise for 200 guest workers

6:22 am on 6 August 2007

Samoa Packing cannery in American Samoa is advertising for at least 200 workers who will be hired under the new guest worker permit programme.

The tuna cannery says that new workers will replace its high employee turnover and also the 200 students hired during the summer, who will be returning to school.

It says the guest worker permit programme provides a 90 day opportunity for illegal overstayers from Samoa to make themselves legal by becoming an employee of Samoa Packing.

The 90 day window ends at the end of this month.

Under the guest worker programme once employment with either of the canneries is terminated the permit is automatically revoked and the guest worker must immediately leave the territory.
