CNMI likely to have to accept federalising of immigration

6:22 am on 6 August 2007

The Commonwealth of the Northern Mariana's representative to the U.S, Pete Tenorio, believes the territory's immigration system will be federalised.

He says the CNMI should cooperate during the process.

Mr Tenorio says the Covenant between CNMI and the US, gives Congress the right to apply the Immigration and Nationality Act at the time of their choosing, and now seems to be the time.

He says CNMI had two choices: either continue fighting federalisation, or cooperate and have a bill that will provide the economic tools the commonwealth needs to rebuild.
