Talks to end Fiji nurses strike ends in deadlock

7:00 am on 7 August 2007

Talks between the Public Service Commission and the Fiji Nurses Association to settle their two-week old strike have again ended in deadlock.

The Fiji Times reports that the breakdown followed what was described as a misunderstanding between the two parties.

The chief executive of the PSC, Taina Tagicakibau, is quoted as saying she would have to think about whether there would be further talks.

Ms Tagicakibau says executives of the nurses say one thing during the talks and another when they are outside.

The Nurses Association general secretary, Kuini Lutua, says Ms Tagicakibau had announced that the association had accepted the 1% pay restoration offer which had confused their striking members.

Meanwhile, more striking nurses are reported to be returning to work, lightening the workload on nurses who have been working long hours.
