US warship arrives in PNG as part of five-nation assistance cruise

A United States warship has arrived in Papua New Guinea to deliver medical and engineering assistance to the people of the Madang region.

The USS Peleliu, a multi-purpose US Navy amphibious ship, will be in PNG for over a week as part of a five-nation cruise providing regional assistance under a Pacific Partnership program.

Military and civilian specialists from the ship will distribute donated clothes, toys, food and medical supplies, run medical and dental clinics.

The US Embassy in Port Moresby also said the specialists will help repair schools, health posts and other public buildings.

The ship has visited the Philippines and Vietnam and after PNG will visit the Solomon Islands and Marshall Islands.
