New air service between Fiji and Tonga

7:15 am on 9 August 2007

A new air service will begin between Tonga and Fiji this month following the grant of a licence by the Tongan government.

The Fiji Sun reports that the service will be operated by Airlines Tonga which is 49-percent owned by Air Fiji.

Air Fiji's chief executive, Sialeni Vuetaki, is chairman of Airlines Tonga.

Mr Vuetaki says Air Fiji has the management rights to Airlines Tonga because it has the expertise, the engineers and the pilots to operate the new service.

Airlines Tonga will charter Air Fiji's 50-seater Convair aircraft which will begin flying from next Wednesday, with services from Vava'u and Nuku'alofa to Nadi.
