PNG bans protests as new parliament is to meet

Papua New Guinea's police chief, Commissioner Gari Baki, has placed a ban on protest marches as he increases security in Port Moresby ahead of the first sitting of Parliament on Monday.

He is bringing three police mobile squads in from the provinces and will make use of trainees from the Bomona Police College.

Commissioner Baki also says the army, which has also been part of the security contingent throughout the election process, will continue to be available.

He says there is intelligence suggesting protests and rioting could occur and police are trying to confirm those reports.

"I have given complete instructions on the ban to my commander in the NCD [National Capital District] not allow any protest marches at all for that matter and by law they will have to give police seven days notice. So at this point in time there are no indications other than that reported through and picked up through intelligence information."
