Fiji interim minister surprised at new GCC legal challenge

Fiji's interim Minister for Fijian Affairs says he surprised suspended members of the Great Council of chiefs are again challenging their ousting in the High Court.

Ratu Epeli Ganilau says the former members will know that the interim regime is already making overtures to other people qualified to sit on the Council.

He says the idea is for the GCC to be more autonomous in the future, but it would still have to work with the ruling administration:

"When we get to a new look GCC we would ensure that the members were of good standing and that they would be responsible and also responsive to government's needs."

Ratu Epeli hopes a newly filled GCC will be finalised by the end of next month.
