The Auckland shot putter Valerie Vili has recorded the third best distance of the year at a meeting in Cairns.

Vili showed great form leading into the World Championships in Osaka later this month, with a throw of 20.03 metres.

Her coach Kirsten Hellier confirmed that it was the best series that Vili had ever had in a competition. Vili will compete again in Cairns on Sunday before going on to Osaka for her competition on the 26th of August.

With only two throwers in the discus and no wind, Beatrice Faumuina came away with a solid performance of 58.08m.

Stuart Farquhar won the javelin with a throw of 77.84m, while James Dolphin was second in the 100m in 10.64s. Visitor Chris Donaldson was fourth in 10.86s.

Anna Smythe also competing as a visitor won her heat of the 100m in 11.99s.
