The ousted SDL party in Fiji says it would welcome a new political party, but stresses it is too early to establish one at this stage.

There are reports in Fiji that a number of politicians and academics are setting up a new multi-racial party ahead of elections expected to be held no later than in early 2009.

The SDL's national director, Peceli Kinivuwai, would approve the formation of a new political party, but urges some caution.

"If they feel they want in political issues that haven't been addressed, everyone has their respective own right. But in Fiji's situation, after the crisis of the 5th of December, I think it would be unwise to start up a new political party. I think what we should be doing now is to stir this country towards good governance by going back to elections."

Peceli Kinivuwai says residents should maintain togetherness rather than split during these tough times.
