Fiji's deposed prime minister has supported the interim administration's decision to set up a separate ministry for fisheries and forests and the appointment of a former minister in his government to head it.

Mr Qarase says the idea of a separate ministry is very good because fisheries and forests have great potential and that is why his government also had a separate ministry for the two sectors.

Fiji's deposed prime minister has supported the interim administration's decision to set up a separate ministry for fisheries and forests and the appointment of a former minister in his government to head it.

Mr Qarase has told Radio Legend that the idea of a separate ministry is very good because fisheries and forests have great potential and that is why his government also had a separate ministry for the two sectors.

On the appointment of his former minister to head it, Mr Qarase says Joketani Cokanasiga is a very well-known and respectable citizen of Fiji and he has made a personal choice to accept the post.

Mr Qarase says Mr Cokanasiga is a very experienced administrator who will do the job well and he wishes the new minister well.

But the national director of Mr Qarase's SDL party, Peceli Kinivuwai, has criticised the new ministry, saying the interim government says it has no money but has come up with its 17th ministerial post which taxpayers will have to fund.

The deposed SDL government had 36 ministers.
