The United States Department of the Interior is now drafting amendments to the Senate version of the bill placing CNMI immigration under federal control.

The deputy assistant secretary for insular affairs, David Cohen, told the Saipan Tribune that the Senate Committee on Energy and Natural Resources has asked the DOI for a second drafting service.

This time, DOI will incorporate its proposed amendments to S. 1634, which the department drafted initially.

Mr Cohen suggested the changes in his testimony before the Senate committee last month.

The recommended amendments are related to provisions on long-term status to temporary workers, refugee protection, authority of the Homeland Security secretary, visa waiver, employment-based visas, and several technical issues.
