Fiji lawyer acting for sacked chiefs threatens legal action against Fijian Affairs Minister

The lawyer for sacked members of Fiji's Great Council of Chiefs has threatened to take legal action to stop the work of a team appointed to review its membership.

Ratu Savenaca Komaisavai says what the minister for Fijian Affairs, Ratu Epeli Ganilau, is doing is illegal because he is only an interim minister.

Ratu Savenaca says he will file an application to stop the 6-member review team, all influential former members of the Great Council, from carrying out their assignment.

But the minister, Ratu Epeli, says Ratu Savenaca does not understand the Fijian Affairs Act and he has called on the lawyer not to mislead the people by his interpretation of the law.

Meanwhile, the former chairman of the Great Council, Ratu Ovini Bokini, has told Radio Legend he may take disciplinary action against the former GCC members in the review team because they did not contact him before taking up their appointment.

Ratu Ovini says the review cannot take place because the matter is still before the courts.
