Fiji ruling in GCC injunction case next week

3:50 pm on 22 August 2007

The suspended members of Fiji's Great Council of Chiefs will know next week whether they will get an injunction to stop the interim government from reviewing the GCC.

The interim minister for Fijian affairs, Ratu Epeli Ganilau, has appointed former GCC members to review the chiefly body.

The lawyer for the sacked GCC members, Ratu Savenaca Komaisavai, says what the minister for Fijian affairs is doing is illegal because he is only an interim minister.

Ratu Savenaca says the sacked members are not against the review, but he says what they do oppose is the method the interim government has introduced.

"The GCC is a constitutional entity and if you want to review such a thing then there are legal checks and balances to follow."

Ratu Savenaca Komaisavai says its will know what its next move will be following the court's decision.
