Fiji's interim cabinet has issued three more free-to-air television licences, bringing the total in the last few weeks to four.

The companies issued with television licences yesterday are Mai TV Limited, Pacific Broadcasting Services Limited and Talei Vision.

Last month the ministry of communications had also issued a licence to Channel 2 Fiji Limited.

Until now, Fiji Television Limited has had a monopoly on free-to-air TV in the country although Pacific Broadcasting has been operating a pay satellite service out of Sydney for some time in partnership with a Fijian provincial company.

The interim minister for communications Taito Waradi, says the new licences are in line with the government's policy to facilitate competition in the industry.
