American Samoa overstayer amnesty expires next week

4:54 pm on 23 August 2007

The amnesty for overstayers in American Samoa, who are part of the guest workers' programme at the canneries, expires next week and according to attorney-general, Fepuleai Afa Ripley, very few people have taken advantage of the provision.

Only citizens of Samoa are entitled for the amnesty but a condition is that they must work for Star Kist or Samoa Packing.

Fepuleai says it appears that citizens of Samoa who are overstayers do not want to work for the canneries and therefore have not taken advantage of the provision.

The attorney-general said the two canneries have gone to villages and worked with village mayors to get the word out about the amnesty.
