Solomons provincial staff lose housing

4:37 pm on 24 August 2007

About 16 Malaita provincial employees in Solomon Islands have been given notices to leave the provincial houses they are living in by today.

The newspaper, Solomon Star, says a letter to the employees dated August the 16th said employees must vacate houses owned by the province to allow provincial ministers to move in.

The letter said this is to enable the ministers perform their duties effectively.

However, most tenants who received the letter described the provincial government's move as inhumane.

One tenant said if they vacate the houses they will have nowhere else to go.
