6:26 am on 27 August 2007

The 13th South Pacific Games officially opened yesterday in Apia in Samoa

Over 20 thousand spectators crammed into newly built stadium.

Elma Ma'ua was there:

"Apia Park was transformed into a sea of colour as Samoa put on a performance that has spectators sitting on the edge of their seats. This included warriors dressed in blue and red preparing to go to battle with their greatest woman warrior, Nafanua. Over one thousand school children added to the colour with the release of hundreds of white, blue and red balloons, the national colour of Samoa. Meanwhile, despite the two hour wait, athletes from 22 countries numbering over five and a half thousand can't wait for the competition to begin Monday (local time)"
