Claims in PNG of HIV sufferers being buried alive

A Papua New Guinea woman claims sufferers of HIV are being buried alive, as many southern Highland locals fear the disease.

Margaret Marabe told a PNG newspaper she's seen infected people with the virus being buried alive by relatives of the Southern Highlands' Tari region in recent months.

But, Port Moresby Catholic Father Jude Ronayne-Forde, says the claims are unconfirmed.

New HIV estimates reveal 1.25 per cent of PNG adults between 15 and 49 years of age are infected by the virus.

HIV support organisation's Annie McPherson of Egat Hope believes the claim of mistreating infected people is correct.
