No tsunami warning after Tonga quake

There have been no tsunami warning and no reports of damage after a magnitude 5.7 earthquake was recorded near Tonga this morning.

The epicentre was located 230 kilometres northeast of Neiafu.

It occured at 6 am local time, and was very shallow at a depth of only ten kilometres.

The director of the Pacific Tsunami Warning Centre in Hawaii, Charles McCreery, says there was no tsunami threat.

There was no waning for this earthquake. We had a preliminary magnitude of 5.8 for this eathquake, which is well below any threshhold for a warning. The earthquake would have had to be several hundred times larger in terms of energy for there to be any kind of a widespread tsunami warning.
