Special French Polynesian assembly sitting imminent

3:44 pm on 28 August 2007

French Polynesia's assembly is now set to be convened tomorrow afternoon [wed] for an extraordinary sitting which is expected to vote on a no-confidence motion.

The president of the assembly says 42 out of 57 members said they wanted the sitting to go ahead.

A time for a vote will then be set.

The opposition Union For Democracy claims to have the support of at least 27 of the 57 assembly members.

The challenge to the government of Gaston Tong Sang comes as French Polynesia is to host the French minister in charge of overseas territories to discuss plans to stabilise the political scene.
