A special naval vessel has begun efforts in French Polynesia to recover the wreck of a Twin Otter plane which crashed off Moorea earlier this month, killing all 20 people onboard.

The ship, the Ile de Re of the Alcatel telecommunications company, arrived from New Caledonia.

The plane is an estimated 450 meters under water and believed to still have six bodies inside it.

Investigators hope the ship's submarine can also recover the aircraft's voice recorder to help determine the cause of the crash.
