2:00 pm on 29 August 2007

American Samoa is to host a major regional church conference next week.

Up to 250 delegates from 18 countries are expected at the 9th general assembly of the Pacific Conference of churches, the main grouping of Christian churches in the region.

Delegates from Europe, the Americas and Australia are also attending the meeting hosted by the American Samoa Council of Churches.

The General Secretary of the Congregational Christian Church of American Samoa, the Reverend Sam Tialavea, gave an overview of the conference.

"There will be several items of business and not only as in general business and work, but there will be working groups which will deal with ecumenicalism in the Pacific, the issue of globalisation and trade, the matter of good governance, the issue of HIV and aids, environmental issues, with climate change."

Reverend Sam Tialavea says there is a pre-assembly for youth which will take place this Friday and Saturday.
