New Nauru government to pursue reforms

2:01 pm on 29 August 2007

Nauru's re-elected finance minister, David Adeang, says the new parliament is now getting back to business with its reforms.

Yesterday, Ludwig Scotty was re-elected president after Saturday's general election which saw 14 of the 18 parliamentarians returned to office, including all government ministers.

Mr Adeang says one of the first priorities is to continue the review of the constitution.

"Now that the 17th parliament has resumed, the constitution review committee, which is a standing committee of the parliament, has been re-established and its up to them now to progress the work or essentially the recommendations made by the constitution convention, and there's lots of changes suggested there in terms of good governance and strengthening of financial governance arrangements here."
