After nearly a month of negotiations, the Papua New Guinea Prime Minister, Sir Michael Somare, has announced his Cabinet, with positions for at least one MP from each of the 14 parties in his coalition government.

He has named Patrick Pruaitch, a controversial Forestry Minister in the last Government, as Finance Minister, and Dr Puka Temu as Deputy Prime Minister.

Don Polye, the previous deputy, has been given Works, Transport and Civil Aviation.

The new Forestry Minister is Belden Namah, a former soldier who was convicted and later pardoned over the Sandline crisis.

Dame Carol Kidu, the only member re-elected from the Melanesian Alliance Party, and the only woman in Parliament for the third successive year, has retained her Community Development portfolio.
