Fiji touch rugby side forfeits two matches for unacceptable player registration

The Fiji mixed touch rugby team has been forced to forfeit its first two matches at the South Pacific Games in Samoa after Niue challenged the registration of seven players.

In the SPG charter, countries can register a maximum of 14 men and 14 women for both the mixed and men's and women's competition.

However, Fiji breached the rules by submitting 21 men and 7 women for the touch tournament.

The Touch Association Committee has decided that Fiji must forfeit but can continue in the competition.

The President of Niue Island Touch Association, Stanley Kalauni, is pleased with the verdict.

"I have also emphasised in the emails that were circulating among the touch countries participating in this tournament that we must agree on all this before we arrive here for the tournament. We are not here to negotiate - we are here to compete."
