Austalian's role in PNG shooting incident probed

An Australian serving as a reserve police officer in Papua New Guinea is being investigated by police over the shooting and wounding of a youth in Rabaul.

Rabaul hotel proprietor Bruce Alexander was one of two reserve officers who discharged firearms during a night patrol by police two weeks ago when the youth was wounded.

David Patrick, aged 16 or 17, was recently discharged from hospital after being treated for wounds caused by shotgun pellets.

Mr Alexander said it was not proven that his shot hit Mr Patrick and the whole incident had been blown out of proportion.

Police in Rabaul say an investigation will determine whether Mr Alexander breached any operational or firearms regulations.
