Accounting assistance project gets underway in Solomon Islands province

9:34 am on 1 September 2007

Helping provincial governments clean up and better manage their accounts is the aim of a new project which started in Solomon Islands Guadalcanal Province this week.

The project, funded by the Regional Assistance Mission, or RAMSI, is a partnership with the Ministry of Provincial Governments and Rural Development, and aims to update the financial accounts of all provinces.

The project will provide accounting assistance to all provincial governments and includes helping to build their capacity.

The Premier of Guadalcanal, Joash Salani, says he appreciates the support being offered to his administration.

He says it will put the Guadalcanal administration on a sound financial footing and enable his government to manage its finances in a clear and transparent manner.

Guadalcanal is the first provincial government to receive this assistance, with the other eight provinces to follow over the coming months.
