Levels of domestic abuse soaring in Solomon Islands capital

The Christian Care Centre on Guadalcanal in Solomon Islands says there has been an increase in the number of violent attacks on women in and around the capital Honiara.

The Solomon Islands Broadcasting Corporation reports that the Christian Care Centre, run by the Church of Melanesia, has provided care for nearly 400 victims of domestic violence since its establishment two years ago.

Sister Doreen Awaiasi, who is in charge of the centre, says many single women and mothers who seek refuge at the centre are the victims of domestic violence.

Sister Doreen told a Theological Seminar in Honiara that the Christian Care Centre is possibly the only agency in Solomon Islands providing refuge for women and children who are victims of violence.
