Papuan prisoner reported to have died in Sulawesi gaol

8:43 am on 4 September 2007

The Indonesia Human Rights Campaign, TAPOL, claims that a Papuan prisoner being held in the Sulawesi capital, Makassar, has died in captivity.

Michael Heselo was serving a sentence in connection with a raid on an ammunition dump in Wamena.

He was being held in Gunungsari Prison, in Makassar.

Following news of his death, about thirty people held a demonstration

outside the regional office of the Department of Law and Human Rights in

Jayapura.

The report states that although there was tension between the demonstrators

and the police because the authorities had not been given notice that a

demonstration would be held, the event proceeded peacefully.
