Malaita Peace Summit begins in Auki

10:18 am on 5 September 2007

The second Malaita leaders' Peace and Reconciliation Summit begins today in the province's capital, Auki.

The summit aims to put together Malaita's view on the recent social unrest before the proposed reconciliation talks with both the national and Guadalcanal provincial governments at the end of this month.

The three-day summit will also provide an opportunity for representatives of the Ministry of Peace and Reconciliation to inform leaders of the Malaita Provincial Executive, the Malaita Peace and Reconciliation Committee and other stakeholders about the present government's policy on the current peace and reconciliation process.

The summit is a follow-up on the First Malaita Leaders Summit held in Auki in November 2004.

The talks are aimed at putting together a common view on the social unrest before the signing of a tripartite Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) between the National and both the Malaita and Guadalcanal Provincial Governments.
