1:25 pm on 6 September 2007

The ousted French Polynesian president, Gaston Tong Sang, has appealed to the public to rise up against the political instabilty and join a weekend protest march in Papeete.

This comes as the assembely is to be convened next week to choose a new president for a term which is certain to be cut short after France announced plans for an early general election.

Mr Tong Sang is being backed by the leaders of several small parties.

His Tahoeraa Huiraatira party has nominated Edouard Fritch as candidate for the presidency at a special meeting in Pirae.

12 hours before nominations close, no candidacy had been lodged officially.
