Fiji reinstates emergency rule, military targets deposed PM

3:48 pm on 6 September 2007

Fiji's interim regime has declared a state of emergency for a period of one month beginning from today.

The military commander and interim prime minister, Commodore Frank Bainimarama, has told Radio Fiji that he will not accept anyone who shows any sign of instability.

He says the military will only act under his command, they will not be on the streets, and police will man the checkpoints.

Commodore Bainimarama has accused the deposed prime minister Laisenia Qarase of trying to destabilise the situation so that he could attract the attention of the Australian military.

The office of the Attorney-General will hold a press conference shortly to make an official announcement.

Earlier today, Commodore Bainimarama said the military had been very lenient on Mr Qarase and allowed him to return to Suva for his court case challenging the legality of last December's military overthrow.

The overthrow of the government in 2000 saw of the coup frontman, George Speight, jailed for his actions after being found guilty of treason.

The interim regime meanwhile is seeking to build a case against Mr Qarase, claiming he committed treason by inviting a foreign military intervention.
