Fiji administration says no role in politics for deposed PM and his party

10:46 am on 7 September 2007

Fiji's interim prime minister says Laisenia Qarase and his SDL party should understand that they will never come back into power.

Commodore Bainimarama has told Radio Legend that the military has made up its mind and the decision will not change.

The comments follow Mr Qarase's earlier statement that he will contest the next general election because it is his democratic right.

Commodore Bainimarama says Mr Qarase and the SDL party have rejected the interim administration's People's Charter for Change and Progress which will pave the way to the next elections.

He says they want to use the constitution to return when they were not observing the constitution when they were in power for seven years.

Commodore Bainimarama says they pretended to provide leadership under a democratic government when there was no democracy.

The SDL's national director, Peceli Kinivuwai, says they will not comment any further following the return of the Public Emergency Regulations.

He said, "These things started because of our comments, so we will not comment anymore."
