4:52 am on 7 September 2007

In French Polynesia the opposition has named its leader, Oscar Temaru, as candidate for next week's election of a new president after the other main party, the Tahoeraa Huiraatira, chose Edouard Fritch as its nominee for the top post.

The ousted president, Gaston Tong Sang, will also seek re-election after last week's ouster.

Mr Tong Sang has been at loggerheads with his party's leadership which endorsed last week's move to vote him out of office.

He has appealed to the public to rise up against the political instabilty and join a weekend protest march in Papeete.
