Flour price raised in Fiji as wheat shortage bites

1:00 pm on 7 September 2007

The Prices and Incomes Board in Fiji says the price of flour will rise by three cents per kilogramme today as a result of the global wheat shortage.

The price of wheat has gone up by 50 percent since the beginning of the year caused

by bad weather in Europe and Australia, and increasing demands for bio fuel.

The PIB's secretary, Ane Naulivou, says flour will now cost about 93 cent a kilogramme.

"Those increases, they reflect the actual review of the actual milling production cost and it has taken the three months average of wheat prices."

Ane Naulivou says there are indicators that wheat prices will climb further.
