A prominent high chief in Fiji, Ratu Epenisa Cakobau, was arrested and taken to the army barracks after an altercation with a soldier at a night club in Suva late on Saturday night.

Ratu Epenisa, a direct descendent of Ratu Seru Cakobau who handed over Fiji to British rule in 1874, has told the Fiji Sun he was provoked by the soldier.

He says he was in the night club with Tailevu rugby players who were celebrating their win when he told a soldier who insulted him to behave.

Ratu Epenisa says as he came out of the night club six soldiers arrested him, took him to the Central Police Station and then to the army camp.

He says he was put in a cell and released on Sunday morning when he had to walk and retrieve his vehicle from near the night club after which he lodged a complaint with the police because he had not breached the Public Emergency Regulations.

The police spokesman, Corporal Suliano Tevita, says an official complaint was lodged against Ratu Epenisa for assaulting a soldier.
