EU not planning aid suspension over Fiji

7:11 pm on 12 September 2007

The European Union does not plan to suspend promised aid payments to Fiji after the interim government re-imposed the Public Emergency Regulations.

An EU spokesperson, Amadeu Altafaj Tardio, says drastically cutting promised aid payments could hurt Fiji's citizens and the EU will therefore refrain from it.

Mr Tardio says however some of the interim government's decisions could affect future aid payments.

He says the EU is currently planning its aid programme for the years 2008 to 2013, and latest developments in Fiji's may jeopardise its share of those payments.
