Indonesia to assist in gun salute at PNG parliament opening

2:29 pm on 14 September 2007

Indonesia is to help Papua New Guinea open its eighth national parliament next Tuesday by providing four artillery pieces and crews to fire a 21-gun salute.

A nine-man Indonesian army artillery team will fire the weapons for the grand opening of the parliamentary sitting in Port Moresby.

The personnel flew in from Indonesia yesterday aboard an Indonesian C-130 Hercules transport aircraft.

The PNG Defence Force commander Peter Ilau says the guns and crews had to be borrowed for the occasion because the PNGDF's artillery is obsolete and has no ammunition.
