Pair in Fiji court over huge drug haul

11:04 am on 17 September 2007

A Mexican woman and a Columbian man will appear in the Nadi magistrate's court today accused of smuggling cocaine with a street value of over 600-thousand US dollars into Fiji.

Police seized over 2-kilogrammes of cocaine from the pair's Nadi hotel room following a tip off last Thursday after they arrived in the country two days earlier.

Fiji police have been questioning the two with the help of a Spanish speaking interpreter and charges will be laid today.

Police are also trying to determine whether the pair had any local contacts and whether the cocaine was meant for sale within Fiji or was intended for transshipment to another country.

Border control authorities are also investigating how the drugs slipped past customs officials at Nadi international airport without detection.
