CNMI governor urges cost-cutting over budget problems

6:47 pm on 18 September 2007

The Governor of the Northern Marianas, Benigno R. Fitial, says a variety of cost-cutting measures must be applied for the government to stay within his proposed 161 million US dollar budget.

The Saipan Tribune reports that among the austerity measures is a reduction in the government's contribution rate to pensions from 39.6 percent to just 11 per cent.

The Governor says that is all the government can afford at this time.

Mr Fitial also says overtime costs must be reduced to two million in the budget.
