Fiji interim PM to address UN General Assembly

6:42 pm on 18 September 2007

Fiji's interim prime minister, Commodore Frank Bainimarama, is expected to address the United Nations General Assembly in New York next week.

Commodore Bainimarama says he has received the invitation and is ready to represent Fiji.

He says he will tell the meeting what democracy is like in Fiji.

It will his first trip abroad since he ousted the government of Laisenia Qarase last December.

Commodore Bainimarama has told Fiji media that he has already meetings lined up with representatives from Cuba and Venezuela.

Commodore Bainimarama said he will not be bothered if Australia and New Zealand oppose his presence at the General Assembly.

The UN has condemned the Fiji coup but it keeps employing Fiji soldiers despite calls by the Commonwealth, Australia and New Zealand to stop doing so.
